Jansen resides on a small farm in the Riversdale district where he lives close to nature. The first “District Six” exhibition called “In Memoriam”, took place in 1985 and covers a period from the late fifties to 1971. He captured the lifestyle, character and environment of an area and era that is no more. Some of the photographs on display are originals from the book “Oos Wes Tuis Bes Distrik Ses” that he, together with Adam Small produced in memory of District Six.

Born in 1929 in Wageningen, Gelderland, Holland Chris Jansen studied engineering and commercial art during the aftermath of World War II. He then became interested in photography and worked as a photo journalist since his arrival in 1952 in South Africa. He produced several photographic Coffee Table Books and contributed to many of other publications. Chris Jansen is well known for his contribution to several books from the KWV regarding, sherry, brandy and then of course wine. This led to “Cape Winelands”, written and photographed by himself. Also by Jansen is “Face of South Africa”, a collection of photographs of South Africa, all in black and white (1972). “Paradise of the World”, “Oos Wes Tuis Bes Distrik Ses”, “Cape Dutch Houses”, and “Namaqualand: Thirstland in Bloom”, are some of his other publications.

He had several exhibitions over the years of which the “In Memoriam”(District Six), “South African Portfolio” by the Luga Group of photographers (Cloete Breytenbach, Chris Jansen and John Rubython), which was shown in Australia, South Africa, Argentine and Portugal. “Wijnland” a photographic essay in colour, the “Camphill” Exhibition and most recently, November 2009, an exhibition in Stellenbosch called “Woman”, covering a period of forty years.

Some views on the work of Chris Jansen:

Melvyn Minnaar - "For looking at the images now - you can see why he was so admired by his peers - and even younger photographers who nowadays work in an altogether different, modern digital medium (2009)

Maxwell Leigh – “While others may regard his work as art, though, Chris avoids applying the word to camera work. He regards photography as a medium of expression”.

O D Wolheim – “Jansen is rapidly becoming known as one of our topmost artists who uses a camera instead of a brush and palette”. (1983)

Madelein van Biljon – “Jansen has always had the ability to establish both mood and place in his pictures.”

Stephanie Baum – “Chris Jansen achieves an impressive tonal range and harmoniously balanced compositions in his landscapes, and “It is in his portraits that Jansen shows his real poetry” (1973)

Eldred Green – “..he uses what poets have used verbally for centuries because it pleases the ear and helps hold the attention, and that is rhyme, in its pictorial form called pictorial echoes.”

Avril Kinsey live in the Greyton Lodge Theatre

Cape Town Academy of Music presents Avril Kinsey live

at the Greyton Lodge, Friday 27th August at 18:00pm.

EVOCA LA GUITARRA ROMÁNTICA

Tickets sold at Greyton Lodge R65

BOOKING ESSENTIAL

028 254 9800

‘This guitarist’s work is ingenious and evocative, the result of a fertile imagination, a master musician of unusual ability.’ Colin Cooper, Classical Guitar (UK)

‘Delicate fretboard wizardry, she has a well-schooled and sensitive style complemented by a broad repertoire.’ Mike Waddacor, Variety (SA)

‘Sharply focused eloquence and total brilliance … a sparkling finish to a recital which had delighted a full house.’ Dick Turpin, The Star Tonight (SA)

YouTube of Kinsey’s Mokoro: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=dp6OcPGoD8c

A concert of some traditional European classics and exotic ‘African-inspired’ compositions. A Photographic Exhibition by LAVONNE BOSMAN. Straight from Artscape in Cape Town to the Greyton Lodge Gallery
Official opening August 1st Saturday at 16:00pm All welcome for snacks, drinks and meet the artist

(Tertius Meintjies exhibition; United People continues in the GL restaurant )

About the Photographer:

Born in Utrecht, Natal on new years day 1977, Lavonne Bosman further grew up in the Overberg, lived in the Netherlands and UK for a few years and is currently living and working in Cape Town as a freelance photographer. She obtained a degree in Drama and psychology at the University of Stellenbosch before studying photography at City Varsity, Cape Town in 2 000.

“I started photographing for the Niall Mellon Housing Initiative in May 2008, covering their housing development areas such as Khayelitsha, Imizamu Yethu, Mfuleni and Paarl.
I was also involved in their annual Blitz in November, December when 2 000 Irish volunteers came to Cape Town to complete 250 houses in one week.

The photographs in this exhibition where taken during the times that I spent in the townships on assignment for Niall Mellon. Some are direct portraits of the beneficiaries and some are snapshots as I passed by the local people in their everyday life. A time of change for a lot of people who are moving from shacks to houses for the first time in their lives.”

Lavonne Bosman can be contacted on 084 548 5659,
lavonnebosman@gmail.com
http://www.lavonne.co.za/
http://www.lavonnebosman.blogspot.com/

“Ilungile”: It is good . A Photographic Exhibition by Lavonne Bosman

Shrewdly conceived and intimately observed, this collection aims to document the heart and soul of a people during times of intense transformation. Rather than focusing on the activity surrounding the actual construction, the photographer trained her subtle lens on an infinitely more dynamic subject: the people who still call row upon row of decrepit shacks home.

Purposefully set against the backdrop of physical improvement in their environment, the stirring characters in this changing scene are portrayed with honesty, liveliness and wit. Void of socio-political commentary and stylistic pretense, these images tend to represent the snapshots of an observant passer-by, an incidental visitor with no intention of being a voyeur. The result is emotionally and aesthetically refreshing.

The reality that many of the subjects appearing in these photographs are not directly influenced by the radical crossover from dilapidated tin to sturdy concrete - the young can not fully comprehend the impact of what’s happening, while the elderly can not fully benefit from the lifetime’s promise it implies - makes these photographs even more intriguing.

We are reminded that there can not be hope without suffering. But we are also reminded, by the simple joy, colour, happiness and inner beauty captured in these images, of the invincibility of the human spirit in the face of adversity. Corporeal poverty can never subtract from the riches contained within. And the utter sanctity of this inner space becomes an extension, a symbol, of the outer structures being raised to improve the lives of these extraordinary people.
Whether this collection is perceived as a glimpse into the daily life of a community on the road to progress, or a final account of a communal lifestyle that might be irreversibly altered by economic upheaval, is up to the viewer. But the resounding message is one of ultimate hope.
In her literal and figurative quest to look for light in a somewhat bleak world, the photographer has succeeded in letting us in on a secret - her creative honesty, together with the fine work being done in the construction of proper housing in this community, allows us to dwell with new vision on the words of Fugard: people are living there.

In the end, home is where the heart is. As this soulful collection shows, in the hearts of these inspirational subjects one sentiment prevails: it is good.
Jac Kritzinger

The Niall Mellon Township Trust was established in 2002 with the aim of providing quality social housing for the impoverished communities in the townships of South Africa. “In our first year we completed 150 homes, over the next six years we have completed 11 000 homes in total, 5 000 were built in 2008.

Each year since we started we have brought Irish volunteers to South Africa to participate in a week long ‘Building Blitz’. In 2008 2000 volunteers travelled from 13 countries to take part in our Building Blitz, during this week an incredible 253 homes were built. This brings to a total of 5 000 volunteers who have participated in our building blitzes up to date.

We are currently building in 23 townships, 13 in the Western Cape and 10 in Gauteng, although we have only been in existence for six years, we are currently the largest charity provider of quality social homes in South Africa.”

Steve Newman - All in one concert

Errol Dyers, Hilton Schilder and Steve Newman - All in One

Live music concert at the Greyton Lodge Theatre

Saturday 24th October 5pm. Born as he was into the musical families of the Schilder’s and Africa’s, Hilton soon found his own sound and developed a musical career of his own. Hilton’s career took of in the 1980’s in partnership with Mac Mckenzie as The Genuines, launching an international reputation that has on numerous occasions over the years made Hilton part of the international jazz scene. As the initiator and driving force behind the band Iconoclast and as a composer and regular member of the band Robbie Jansen’s Sons of Table Mountain, Hilton Schilder has been part of both the international and national South African music scene for decades. Hilton appears on more than 23 cd’s apart from three of his own. His debut album No Turning Back (2003) was nominated for the SAMA Award as best jazz Contemporary album. Although Hilton has gained much respect for his skills as a pianist and composer, he actually plays several instruments. This becomes apparent on his and Alex Van Heerden’s album Future Cape (2006). On this album Hilton’s musical skills shows in his use of as diverse instruments as Khoi mouth-bow, guitar, canter, piano, Navaho flute etc. Hilton Schilder’s last album Elements of Surprise (2007) is a solo piano album where Hilton plays his own compositions, both present and past ones. Currently Hilton is working on two different concepts. Hilton is working on a cd based on his own compositions played by his quartet, The Hilton Schilder Group. This group that was officially formed in 2006, has rapidly gained great popularity, as mirrored by their participation of the Cape Town International Jazz Festival in Cape Town 2007 and the Indian Ocean Jazz Festival in Reunion. Artist in residence at the Bird’s Eye Jazz Club in Basel, Switzerland in 2008.

Janine Gregoir watercolour art exhibition

Greyton Lodge is proud to open the exhition of Janine Gregoir water colours. Seeking a new challenge he returned to his first passion.
A man’s work is little more than a journey through his life, in order to rediscover (through the detours of art), those two or three great but simple images that first found access to his heart.
-Albert Camus

Photography and the nature of light was something that fascinated him from an early age. Growing up on a farm in a remote part of South Africa Tertius got his hands on a faded Basic Photography manual and a primitive box camera while rummaging through a pile of rubbish that his father was about to burn. He build his first primitive darkroom at the age of twelve and continued to explore the intriguing relationship between time and light, seeking to capture that single ‘magical moment’ as reflected by the human condition, ever since.

Chris Tokalon Live at the GL Theatre

Don’t Tune Me – I’ll Tune You
One man music comedy show

“If music be the food of love, play on”
“Laughter is the best medicine”

At Greyton Lodge, Friday 7th August 20:00pm Tickets R70 sold at Greyton Lodge

A Wacky one-man show, where you get to see Chris abilities to imitate instruments, people and himself, using a multi-tracking pedal which creates a backing band – all played by him! Music and Comedy by a one-man beat box orchestra who also plays real sax, flute and a spaceship.

Christopher Tokalon is a musician, composer, performer, sound therapist and recording artist. He has played sax and flute since 1979 in a wide variety of jazz ensembles, musicals and cabarets, as well as being constantly involved in and performing local original music with bands and artists such as Peto, the Jazz Hounds, Steve Newman, Tony Cox, Drum Cafe and his own world music project, Soulbird.

Also with the nickname the Marvelous Mouth he presents a one man comedy show entitled “Don’t Tune Me, I’ll Tune You”, in which he is known for his astonishing ability to mimic musical instruments, birds, animals and people in performance.

He has developed a natural ability for overtone singing and creating evocations of natural sounds as part of a Sound therapy process. About ten years ago Christopher started specializing in Sound Journeys, a process where “passengers” lie down and receive a wonderfully calming, energizing sound bath. The effect of this cellular massage is to shake loose stress and trauma and create a balance between body, mind and spirit. Journeys can be done for groups or individuals and Chris has taken literally thousands of people on transformational Sound Journeys.

Christopher is also an expert in facilitating interactive music sessions and performing inspirational music and comedy for teambuilding in corporations, on holistic retreats, children's playshops and as a supplement to other workshops. He has produced two CDs of specially composed music for relaxation and upliftment. His work has received acclaim from therapists, health journals and basically everyone who has been on a magical sound experience with him.CHRIS “THE MARVELLOUS MOUTH” TOKALON presents “DON’T TUNE ME – I’LL TUNE YOU”

You might have seen him in recent years alongside Steve Newman and Tony Cox as a saxophonist, flautist and funny front man in the musical comedy "Don't Tune Us - We'll Tune You"; imitating instruments and impersonating a couple of well-loved public figures with hilarious results. He returns to the stage with a solo show, quite aptly titled "Don't Tune Me - I'll Tune You!" This is where he gets to show off and combine all his talents as a comedian, musician, composer, sound therapist and whacky, walking windbag – in this highly entertaining show he calls himself ‘the Marvellous Mouth’ because of his astonishing abilities to mimic musical instruments, people, birds and animals. All these skills are put to good use in a dazzling array of musical events and ‘tunes’.

The show consists of snappy and witty comedy, in various accents and characters, which are accompanied by his ‘tunes’, that display an unbelievable range of vocal gymnastics. This is all woven together with a nifty technical device called the DD20 Loop Sampler; a foot pedal which enables Christopher to record or loop his voice live in front of his audience. He adds layer after layer of bass, drums, guitar, trumpet etc., etc. and all the sounds are produced from his big fat marvelous mouth.

Basically he multi-tracks himself to create his own backing band and then adds on vocals and lyrics which contain silly and /or inspiring messages which are funny and potentially life changing to the listener. Some tunes have no silly lyrics in them, instead they have melodic and haunting interwoven melodies from vocals, sax and flute. Sax and flute are his real life instruments which he mastered when he was a more ‘serious’ musician. His show is suitable entertainment for any celebration or event, private or corporate and it appeals to all age groups. It is child friendly as well! Two popular sayings will endorse this show; “If music be the food of love, play on” and “Laughter is the best medicine”. So as he says, “Don’t tune me – I’ll tune you!”

christopher@wam.co.za

072 220 3736

Intntnl : +27 72 220 3736

http://www.soundman.co.za/

Blues evening concert

THE GREYTON LODGE PRESENTS

GREYTON GOT THE

BLUES

WOKE UP THIS MORNING?
GOT THE BLUES FIXIN' TO DIE?
WANNA LAY YOUR HEAD ON THAT LONESOME RAILROAD LINE?
OR WORSE- FEEL LIKE JUMPING INTO A GREYTON POTHOLE?

RATHER HITCH A RIDE TO THE GL BARRELHOUSE FOR
REAL MISSISSISSISSISSIPPI AND CHICAGO BLUES

WHEN? Since then, he has ventured into the vast depths of music. Having being poisoned by his Father's love for Jazz as a kid, Craig has developed a taste for fine music - and now he bleeds these untold stories of black slavery, from which Jazz was born. In 2007 Craig initiated the first ever Jazz band at Bellville Technical High School, named Legacy. The name is self-explanatory, and thus they've made history. One year later, and he's half way through the Certificate Programme at The University of Stellenbosch, studying Classical music. Craig has also been elected to be the Jazz Guitarist for The Stellenbosch Youth Jazz Band and has represented the university at the Standard Bank National Youth Jazz Festival held in Grahamstown annually. That's right, only one year later, and he has performed alongside an endless list of Cape Town's young Jazz musicians, as well as legends such as Robbie Jansen. Craig continues to study music and the Guitar, and aspires to experiment with different genres, art forms and artists: teaming up with Joshua Prinsloo and the gang of Green Room Collective to explore Fine Art as a genre of music. With that said, one cannot deny one's roots and Craig wishes to thank Cuecumber Jazz for granting him the opportunity to once again, delve into the vast depths of Jazz from which he, as a Guitarist, was born.
Gemayel Kroukamp – Drums / Manager
Gemayel started his music studies at the age of 4 playing classical guitar and piano. At age 12 he discovered the drums, which he fell in love with.
At the age of sixteen he played drums for major stage productions such as FAME and Grease. During this period he also played for numerous Gospel bands in and around the Overberg region.
During 2005 he started playing Jazz with a number of Big Bands in Cape Town, developing a new love for Jazz. Some of the Jazz performances were with the Austrian Jazz quartet Six Tension on their Cape Town tour. He also performed with various Cape Town musicians such as Jeff Weiner, Mike Laatz and Ed Kirkwood. It was always his dream to play in his own band, This dream was realized with the creation of a hot and exciting new band called Cuecumber Jazz.
Zanelle Stipp –Trumpet / Synth
Zanelle started having music lessons at the age of 5 and over the years tried and tested many different instruments. She eventually found “the one” and fell in love with the trumpet.
In 1998 she pursued her studies at the South African College of Music (UCT). While studying, she became a member of the UCT Big Band under the direction of Prof Mike Campbell, became a member of the National Youth Jazz Band in 2000 and performed at many festivals in and around Cape Town, such as the Grahamstown Jazz Festival and Joy of Jazz Festival. With over 650 of the world´s media coming to the region, the spotlight of the motoring world will be on the area of Stellenbosch and other venues all around the Western Cape, including Greyton Lodge.

This international event is the first opportunity for the global press to test-drive both the coupé and convertible versions of Jaguar´s new sports car. Made entirely from aluminium, the 4,2 litre Jaguar XK is a continuation of the line of beautiful sports cars Jaguar has been producing since the company was founded in Coventy in 1923.

Jaguar chose the Western Cape as a venue after an exhaustive selection process during which it looked at venues from all over the world. The Western Cape was chosen for its outstanding beauty, its excellent road network and the famous hospitality of the local community. Jaguar chose the Lanzerac Manor Hotel in the heart of Stellenboch as the base for the operations. However, the road routes for the journalists testing the new models took in venues such as Greyton Lodge in Greyton, Franchhoek, Caledon, Kleinmond and Cape Town itself – a perfect opportunity to showcase the beauty and attractions of the Western Cape to many journalists who had not previously visited South Africa.

Commenting on the choice of the Western Cape as the venue for this important launch, Jaguar Global PR Manager jay Warden said: "We are delighted to be able to bring such a large number of the world´s media to this most beautiful country. We feel strongly that the area will provide the perfect backdrop for the beautiful new Jaguar XK and we have been delighted by the feedback that we have received so far, as well as the wonderful hospitality we have been afforded since our arrival."

With a total of 71 cars and a team of over 50 people working on the project, the logistics of putting together such a huge operation were challenging. Work on the project took over a year and the planning was meticulousThe result was an event that ensured that the media had the opportunity to drive the cars on excellent roads as well as experience at first hand the local ambience.

The local community in Stellenbosch and surrounding areas played a huge part in the overall running of the event, and played host to journalists from countries as diverse as the United States, China, Russia, Japan and all of the European countries. In total some 272,000 kilometres were be covered over a 6 week period making this one of the biggest press launches in Jaguar´s history. With a permanent team of 11 mechanics and a wash crew team of 10 keeping the cars on the road and in pristine condition, the Jaguar XK should stood out as they passed through the towns and villages of the Western Cape.

Greyton Lodge was very proud to participate in this event. 650 International journalists and the Jaguar team came to Greyton Lodge 2-3 times a week over a 6-week period for lunches and coffee/tea breaks.
